Trainee Estimator
What does your role involve?
As a trainee estimator, I assist the pre-construction team with securing bids and tenders. I am required to read and analyse BoQs so that I have a firm understanding of the elements that need pricing, and what the clients’ requirements are. This is a crucial part of estimating as it allows me to obtain more accurate quotes from our sub-contractors and suppliers. It is important that research into material, equipment and labour costs has been carried out to ensure that while the cost is effective, the quality remains high. My other day-to-day tasks include reviewing tender documents, creating abstracts, updating supply chain, attending meetings with senior management and external suppliers.
What’s your background?
I am new to the construction industry, having only recently started out with Elkins Construction. Last summer, I completed my degree in Politics and International Relations, but decided that, whilst I enjoyed the subject, a career in the construction industry would suit me best. This industry has always been of interest to me and stood out due its constantly evolving nature. Before this, I worked as a Client Services Executive (Account Manager) for one of the UK’s leading environmental risk reduction companies.
What are you enjoying most so far about your role?
So far, I am enjoying speaking to and meeting new people within the industry. Networking is a valuable activity, which allows you to learn from others’ experiences and expertise. No two days are the same at Elkins, which makes my work life interesting and enjoyable. I am constantly learning new things, and despite my short time with the company, believe I have acquired a plethora of new skills. I look forward to seeing where the next couple of months of my traineeship take me.
What appealed to you about Elkins?
Elkins appealed to me due to its family structure. It is well-respected within the industry and has the experience to assist me in my development. It is important to feel valued and appreciated in the workplace. In some companies, you are just a number, but at Elkins, you are made to feel like family. The support I have already received on my traineeship demonstrates that the company is invested in my career and helping me to progress.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family. I am a big foodie, so trying new restaurants is one of my favourite things to do. Otherwise, you’ll catch me at the gym burning off those calories.
