With Christmas coming up, this is a busy time for the local charities and organisations we work with, and we’ve been continuing to support their many events and activities wherever possible. Let’s catch up on what we’ve been up to since our last update.
Community initiatives
As part of our commitment to providing social value on our Kingswood Estate project for Southwark Council, we continue to work with Dulwich Wood Primary School and have supported two of the school’s recent events – the Halloween Disco and Winter Fair – by donating £100 of Tesco vouchers to each. We have also donated £250 towards the Kingswood Senior Citizens Christmas Party, which takes place on 14th December.
We have been working with Kingswood Arts on various initiatives over the past year. The not-for-profit provides many different opportunities and events for local people, and through our partnership, we have been able to reach even more of the Southwark community.
In November, some of our team were able to attend the annual Kingswood Arts Fundraising Gala. It was a fantastic event, where we had to chance to celebrate the organisations’ great work and meet other businesses working in the local area in the beautiful setting of historic Kingswood House.
Kingswood Arts is also running a programme of special Christmas carol evenings to celebrate the festive season on 6th, 13th and 20th December, one of which, will feature the children of Dulwich Wood Primary School. We were pleased to donate £2,000 towards the Christmas tree, decorations and materials required for these events, which are free to attend and will feature Christmas stalls, live music, mince pies and mulled wine, as well as the sing-along carols.
New partnerships
We are excited to have recently become a corporate partner of Charlton Athletic Community Trust, having signed up to support its Extra Time project – a weekly social club for over 55s in Greenwich and Bexley. We will be sponsoring the programme by giving £8,000 towards its running costs over the next year and our Social Value Manager, Ayesha, will be volunteering at the sessions every month.
As well as our regular sponsorship, we will be providing additional support for specific events and initiatives wherever we can and will be donating £1,000 for the Extra Time Christmas Party.
Work experience
We have been continuing our work with local schools and organisations in Greenwich to promote careers in construction and provide more opportunities for young people looking to get into the industry for our client Royal Borough of Greenwich.
In October, we attended Futures Week at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College to conduct mock interviews with students, and we have continued to strengthen our partnership with the college by recently offering work experience opportunities to four students.
At the beginning of November, we welcomed two electrical students, Peadar and Finley, for a five-week placement at our Well Hall Road site to complete work experience required for their Level 3 Electrical course. We also provided both students with their own toolkits, which they can keep and take with them once their work experience is complete.
Two further Shooters Hill students also joined us for work experience for a week in mid-November. Painting and decorating students, Julian and Tijan, worked with our former apprentice, and now Multi-Trader, Kyle Harris, on the refurbishment of a unit near our head office in Deptford.
We look forward to providing further opportunities to help young people gain experience in the construction industry through our partnerships with local schools, colleges and educational facilities in 2024.
