At Elkins we have been proudly supporting Southwark-based gardening and arts charity, Edible Rotherhithe, for a number of years. Our long-term partnership with the charity has seen us volunteering and providing donations for its ongoing gardening club at Surrey Square School, as well as other events and activities. As part of our continued support, we are pleased to have recently donated £500 to help get two fantastic new projects up and running.
For the first of these, Edible Rotherhithe will be working with a group of adult SEN learners to build a food and herb garden on the roof of one of Southwark College’s buildings. The project is being carried out in partnership with the College and Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garett. Not only will the creation and maintenance of the garden offer a fantastic multi-sensory activity for the students, the new garden space will also be a zen area where they can come and relax, providing real benefits to their mental and physical health and wellbeing.
The charity’s second new project is setting up a new gardening club at Dog Kennel Hill Primary School. This will be similar to its gardening project at Surrey Square, where it has been running a weekly food growing and gardening after school club for a number of years. The club will offer children a safe and supportive environment where they can have fun, spend time outdoors and learn about the benefits of growing and cooking their own sustainable produce. Activities are also linked to the curriculum, to provide a practical element to their everyday learning.
Edible Rotherhithe Trustee and Volunteer, Christina Wheatley, said, “We have worked with Elkins for a number of years and are always grateful for their continued support. This generous donation will help us get these two exciting new projects off the ground, which will have a really positive impact on students at the school and college. We look forward to getting started at the beginning of the next academic year in early September.”
