While on site at our Kingswood Estate project for Southwark Council, the Elkins team have been working on a number of community initiatives to improve the surroundings for residents.
One of these involved the clearance of the estate’s previously award-winning garden. From the outset it was clear that many of the plants and shrubs making up the garden would need to be removed to allow for scaffolding to facilitate our building works, so the Elkins site team held a consultation with Kingswood residents to establish a solution that would be beneficial to them.
During the consultation, residents informed us that the garden was unfortunately no longer cared for due to illness and bereavement. A plan of action was agreed whereby, in the first instance pots and compost were provided to the residents so they could remove any plants they wished to keep from the current garden. Following this we agreed to clear the remaining area to allow the construction works to take place. Once complete, the residents will have a blank canvas from which to start a new garden and can relocate the plants they saved.
We are also pleased to say that Southwark Council are engaging with Kingswood Estate residents to organise volunteers to maintain this, and other areas, of the estate. We hope that there will be an opportunity for us to provide a further helping hand.
